Nellie Appleby, Vita Litvak and Amanda Sauer utilize photography, installation and video to revere, complicate and question the human relationship to the natural world. Sauer’s large format color photographs of controlled natural environments, such as parks, nature centers and zoos, confuse the boundaries between “natural” and human, reality and fantasy, truth and manipulation. Appleby extends the meaning of her photographs and films by pairing them with drawings, houseplants, tire planters, newspaper clippings, terrariums and the mysterious unknown. Litvak confronts the awkward relationship between people and nature in a series of large-scale photographs of people experiencing the ocean.
