Hogg’s paintings isolate excerpts sourced from Old Master paintings. For Floating Faces, Hogg captures specific human facial expressions through the art of portraiture. Hogg seeks understanding of how and why we as a society read portraits through the filter of our own ahistorical views and preconceptions. Rather than the wooden pose which can be the product of a long sitting, Hogg’s found expressions captured a manufactured illusion of fleeting moments of emotion or attitude.
